Lako Pacific announce the release of the Neuros, a YouTube set top box.

Melbourne
, October 17, 2007 – Lako Pacific and Neuros announce the Australian release of the Neuros Open Source Device (OSD); an innovative media streaming set-top box and recording device, which allows users to watch YouTube on their television.  The Neuros OSD is the first open source, Linux based embedded media centre which allows users to play, record, stream and share digital content from the PC, network storage device, the Internet and other possible portable devices such as iPods and PSPs using a simple remote control and on-screen menu. The concept of the Neuros OSD is freeing and delivering digital media content from the PC and Internet to the lounge room TV, appealing to customers with broadband Internet connection.

Watch YouTube on TV

One of the most appealing and innovative features of the Neuros OSD is that it enables users to play videos directly from YouTube on their TV.  YouTube is a communicative phenomenon which allows you to share, upload and watch all types of videos clips via the Internet. The Neuros OSD allows users to watch YouTube comfortably on their own television sets, rather than viewing videos hunched over a desk and computer. Users can view the latest or most popular videos, perform keyword searches and browse videos according to category and rating, with the convenience of using a remote control. There are no restrictions on the video content available.

Home & Entertainment Worlds Connected!

The principle functions of the Neuros are streaming and archiving. The Neuros OSD allows users to watch Internet-based videos, videos downloaded from the Internet, view digital photo slideshows, and play MP3 music files through their home audio system, by connecting it to a home network using the built-in LAN port. As an advanced network media streamer, it supports an extensive list of image, audio and video formats including JPG, BMP, MP3, Ogg, Vorbis, FLAC, MPEG-4, AVI, Flash & Quicktime videos.

The Neuros also allows users to record from virtually any video source. With a built-in encoder, users can ingest videos from appliances such as the TV, DVD players, camcorders and VCRs to a storage medium such as memory cards and network storage drivers in MPEG-4 (such as PSP or iPod video) format  via analogue AV inputs. Users can watch pre recorded TV shows and home movies in their lounge room or store it on portable devices such as an iPod, iPhone, Smartphone or PSP for "entertainment on the go."

Open Source, Constantly Evolving

The unique profile of the Neuros is its advanced and growing technology.  Based on Linux open source, Neuros publishes its source code freely to its dedicated community of power users and developers, encouraging further, unrestricted product development. With automatic software updates, the unit constantly evolves and upgrades itself, so it doesn't outdate in the same way as other digital media appliances or media centre PCs.

“The amazing pace of change in Int
ernet media is driven by users,” said Neuros CEO Joe Born. “The only way for a device manufacturer to keep pace is to allow those same users to participate in development.”

Other Key Features

The Neuros OSD also features:

  • Schedule (timer) recording
  • Customisable slideshows
  • IR Blaster to control the set top box
  • Can run third party applications
  • Remote control
